The Power of Time

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 01:46 AM PST

Eco Clock is a brilliant way to make sure we extract every bit of juice from a discarded AA battery. There are 12 slots on the face of the clock to host the used batteries and collectively they power the device. The design also includes a really fun feature where the different levels of juice in each battery are represented by color. Totally cool and something we really want to see in the market, the Eco Clock well deserves the Liteon Award that it won this year.

Full Spectrum Lamp

The simple yet functional Kenkolight by designer Young-Il Park features an extendable arm that allows it to easily switch from work light to night light. When the arm is closed, the built-in diffuser creates a faint glow perfect for subtle lighting. Just for kicks, the base also integrates a digital clock display as well as a timer that can activate the light at specified times to replicate sunrise or dawn.

Gentlemanly Benz Watch

Automotive enthusiast and designer Marko Petrovic’s Mercedes 320 Tourbillion watch is an homage to the Mercedes Benz type 320, a cabriolet first introduced in 1937. Inspired by the instrument cluster of the 320, the Tourbillion exhibits the same meticulous attention to detail and overall elegance still found in the brand today. Another nod to the automotive influence are hours and minutes shown as miles or kilometers in a racing scale.

Xbox Evolution

The 100% digital Xbox Prestige uses the foundations of the previous 360 Kinect to form this completely controller-less gaming console that’s even smaller than the Xbox Slim. A combination of motion sensor technology, including not one but two cameras built into the console, and integrated voice recognition make it a super responsive and hands-free gaming powerhouse.

The KinectIN feature allows the user to purchase a game and simply scan the chip to the console. Once scanned to the user’s profile, play can begin in Microsoft Xbox Cloud or from the internal 2TB hard drive.

The console has an 8-core processor for super-speed performance up to 20 times faster than previous Xbox models. It supports 3D, 4K2K, multiTV (DPConnect), live TV and webcam, as well as GPS that allows users to view the location of any other user on an active map.

Singapore Calling – Live Coverage of the 2011 red dot concept design

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 12:00 AM PST

One of the biggest highlights of the red dot presentation ceremony in Singapore is the catwalk that the winners do. As they take center-stage, rejoice and strut their booty, YD will be there to capture each and every moment of their glory! Facebook, Twitter and this very homepage will be your window to Singapore! Come, take a peek….

After the successful coverage of the reddot Gala in Germany, YD heads over to Singapore to mingle with the concept design winners. As a part of the team to be present live on site, I am super excited to explore the red dot museum, gain insights into the winning concept design and generally chat with Ken Koo, the main force behind concept design awards. And of course there will be plenty of pictures and videos to capture the essence of the event.

On 25th November, the event will begin with a cocktail reception and then proceed to the presentation of the red dot award: design concept 2011. A Winner's Special Exhibition at the museum soon follows this. The evening promises to be magical and we don't want you to miss any of the fun.

If you have any questions, requests or suggestions of what you would like to see or want to meet up at the event, do leave me a comment in this post.

Catch us Live on Facebook and Twitter 6:30 pm (Singapore Time; 2:30 am PST) onwards.
