5 Cool Concepts that YD Likes

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 01:57 AM PST

In our quest to bring you the best in concept design, we often come across projects that are simply superb but due to lack of information or technicalities are put in the backburners for further research. Here is a collection of 5 Cool Devices and Gadgets that were in our resource pool but never got published. Enjoy!

Custombook Laptop

This innovative laptop features a transparent touchscreen and a customizable touch keyboard. Flip the lid close, and it transforms into a tablet! The keyboard can be configured to resemble a Mac, IBM etc.

Personal Digital Library

The Personal Digital Library is a 10-megapixel camera with an expandable screen and Internet connectivity. Digital Dolby Sound, organizer apps and library, are just some of its innovative features.

Luxury Palette Mobile Phone

The Luxury Palette is a dual screen mobile phone with an integrated stylus. It's the convenient form of the phone that makes it a cool desk accessory. Someone like me will probably prop it like a calendar or a digital photo frame, just for kick's sake!

Sandwich Phone

A triple layer phone, The Sandwich includes individual displays for Phone, MP3 player and Camera. Styled more like a pocket notebook with only 3 pages, this concept can be developed to represent a sleek handy gadget for students and businessmen alike!

The Eye – Multi Mini Projector

The Eye is a pocket-sized camera and projector with dual LCD screens. It seamlessly glides between a digital camera, a video recorder and a projector. Imagine the kinda instant shows you can put on for all the creative photos and wild videos you have shot! Awesome!

Story of a Paint Can

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 01:00 AM PST

The Edge Drop is not rocket science! It is a simple redesign of the paint can to ensure that you pour out all the paint into the mixing bucket without spilling any. Similar to the spout of a jug, the inward niche on the rim looks to be a practical solution and something that can make a difference. What do you think?

Edge Drop is a 2011 iF concept design entry.

Apocalypse Please

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 12:03 AM PST

The inspiration behind the Adjust watch was an imaginative, apocalyptic storyline created by the designer that involves corporate control, an earth left in shambles, and a group of surviving humans communicating covertly through a new language based on triangles. I won’t get into the details – but have a look for yourself at this representation of their experience.

Aesthetically futuristic and minimal, the watch consists of a strap made of pieces of flexible plastic that are molded to the likeness of links. The outer part of the case is more rigid with a flat top that features a cavity that hosts the display covers. The back is metal, contrasting the plastic pieces and providing an illusion of thickness to the case.
Time can be read in the combination of 32 LED triangles that emulate classic digits. One side of each triangle is slightly brighter than the rest based on the position of the internal diode. It may look cryptic but once this is realized, the user will find it easy to read time with hours on top and minutes below.
A number of interchangeable color filters also make it customizable to the user’s color preference.

Park Lover’s Pit-Stop

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 12:01 AM PST

Viktoria Tomova’s urban outdoor rest area concept, Be Happy, features a unique mechanical awning system that can be retracted and extended via sunlight sensors or at the push of a button. The clean, minimal form of the U-shaped columns provides ample support for the protective covering while avoiding obtrusion of the view to the surrounding nature. Intelligent spatial decisions and purposefully placed seating also provide a nice balance of both privacy and invitation.

Irreducible Simplicity

Invisible City’s premier collection of handmade furniture, Incunabular, begins with this interesting tripodal side table that designer Simon Moorhouse describes as having “irreducible simplicity.” The collection is handmade in southeast England and blends traditional craftsmanship with innovative modern design presented in high quality and sustainably sourced walnut, ash, or oak.
