Mindplar: Designed Differently! Posted: 01 Nov 2013 06:32 AM PDT Kickstarter success stories seem to be very heart-warming, but the truth of the matter is that there is a great amount of sweat, blood and tension expended, just to get the finished products out to the backers. Mindplar's story is no different than this, however they have managed to sustain and emerge as design studio that has carved their own path. The DEFENDE & ELITE are two awesome bumpers for the iPhone that are designed differently and boast impeccable lineage. Mindplar Mantra: Design Differently, Good Quality DEFENDE is a bumper that is ultra-hard & ultra-lightweight, crafted from 6061 aluminum alloy of aerospace material with precision CNC machining. The power, mute and volume control buttons have fine detail design. Interestingly, the i+case is also designed as a hanging ornament, adding a dash of oomph. Mindplar has used high quality, state of the art laser engraving and is design for iPhone5 and 5s use. ELITE – Understated Glamour The ELITE is also crafted with the ultra-hard and ultra-light 6061 aluminum, and it features a plastic cover to protect the back of iPhone from the elements. Essentially, the Mindplar story simply inspires to keep going and growing, despite the adversities we may face. Like most startups they faced financial issues and supply-chain issues. Money was resolved using Kickstarter, but the rest needed to be aligned. I think the bigger picture in all of this is that as designers, we need to continue to continue to develop and grow, despite the challenges we face. It uses the built-in accelerometer or gyroscope of the Smartphone, to intuitively change your social network status to 'absent', 'available', 'busy', or 'away'. For example, if you are logged into Facebook, and want to switch your status from 'available' to 'invisible', then simply nudge the shell to a side-face. This not only changes the status but also changes the mode from 'ring' to 'silent'. The only other corresponding mode is 'vibrate'. AVA transforms your phone in your avatar by functioning as a bridge between the physical and virtual worlds. Users can change their virtual status by physically interacting with their Smartphone. By leaning the phone up, down or to one side or the other, the user can generate a status: 'absent', 'available', 'busy', or 'away'. This synchronizes with different social networks. The phone will correspondingly be set to the appropriate mode – such as 'vibrate', 'ring', or 'silent'. AVA is a 2013 red dot award: design concept winner! The X – Pen Magic Posted: 01 Nov 2013 02:37 AM PDT For a person who gets inspired by fine writing instruments, it should be easy for me to articulate my opinion about the X – Pen, but for some odd reason I have a block! I think it stems from the fact that I equated well designed pens with the high-end brands. The X – Pen has forced me to rewire my thinking & take into consideration that lovingly crafted pens can be equally inspiring, distinguished and exude the same amount of confidence that a Porsche Design TecFlex or a Mont Blanc can! Designer Arash Malek fell in love with the Pilot Razor Point and Fineliner when he was studying in design school. His brother Mehdi (engineering background) and he were equally passionate about the process of making things and often delved into the DIY world. The love of tools and drive for making things, led to the idea of creating a pen the celebrated the awesomeness of the plastic felt tip Pilot Pen. The idea was to integrate fun and functionality, while presenting an affordable product. The brothers decided to craft a pen that incorporated everything they cared about. As Arash explains, "The hex on the cap is a tool used to refill the pen. The process of refilling the pen is an exploration of disassembly and assembly. The magnetic cap was a feature we needed to tell apart ferrous from non-ferrous metals while shopping for metal, it also makes mounting the cap incredibly fun." Their excitement regarding the X – Pen is infectious! If I were to come up with a fun-DIY-pen, then this would probably be it! The X – Pen is essentially a machined 6061 aircraft grade aluminium felt tip pen that is powered by both the Pilot razor point & the Pilot Fineliner. The pen hopes to excite and engage designers, architects, engineers, and do it yourselfers; but quite honestly I think anyone with passion for pens will love to add this to their collection! Features: The cap has a hex machined on it so that you can open the hex set screw used to secure in the ink. The process of refilling the ink is as exciting as building a model car or airplane! Aircraft grade aluminium 6061. X – Pen uses a standard off the shelf hex set screw (easy to replace in case it gets lost) the pen looks great with or without a nickel plate setscrew. Unibody design, nothing to get loose while using the pen. Magnetic cap secures effortlessly on pen, is fun to play with, makes grabbing paper clips or push pins a breeze. 0.43" diameter (most comfortable diameter according to experiments and feedback from users). 4" overall length fits in your pockets unnoticed. Good design takes work, and getting all your work together takes time too. This is the main reason why many designers like me have a half-baked portfolio. You know, the shoemaker with bad shoes… This said, you shouldn’t give up, there are ways to speed up the portfolio creation process. Let’s take a look at the tools that can save you a lot of time. Presenting your work One of the time-consuming tasks when creating a portfolio site is to prepare all of your projects for display, which can be much harder than it seems. To do it, there are many mock-ups that can be very helpful. 1. Stationery mockup Give a good overview of the corporate identites you have created with this great mockup that you can easily customize. 2. Brochure mockup A photorealistic brochure mockup that will help you to present your brochure project in a nice way. Brochures are very hard to photograph properly, so this mockup should make things easier. 3. Poster mockup template A template with four variants to show off your posters. 4. Responsive web mock-ups Beautiful devices to display your responsive sites in every device. 5. Trifold brochure mock-up If you have designed some of those small trifold brochure, this mock-up will let you introduce these projects well. Building your website Nowadays building a portfolio site is quite easy, but moving from one system to another is still a daunting task, so make sure you choose well at first. 6. WordPress WordPress powers something like 20% of the web now, and a part of this is made of designers’ portfolios. If you are looking for a solution that is free, powerful and relatively easy to install, look no further than WordPress. 7. Portfolio systems Using a portfolio system to create your portfolio should make perfect sense but it’s probably not the best way to go. The first default is that you’ll get your data on external servers, and you’ll have to pay if you want to have your own domain name. If you still want to go with this, you can check out Behance, Cargo Collective or Carbonmade. 8. Website builders Website builders are a good way to get around the technicalities of building a site. The only downside is that you’ll have to pay to get some pro features. If you don’t know which website builder to choose, give a try to Wix or Squarespace, they are industry leaders for a good reason. WordPress portfolio templates If you have chosen to use WordPress for your portfolio, you will need to customize it to make it fit your needs. If you are a coder, you can easily create a custom WordPress theme, 9. Yin & Yang A beautiful, minimalistic WordPress portfolio theme. It comes with a filterable portfolio, tileable patterns, localisation and video support, among other things. 10. uDesign The uDesign WordPress theme is probably one of the most comprehensive WordPress themes you’ll find out there. It can be customize with many different layouts for the portfolio pages, homepages, sliders, backgrounds,… 11. King Size A theme that comes with full-screen pictures in the background and tons of awesome gallery features. Portfolio icons Icons can be a good complement to enhance your portfolio’s readability and design. Thanks to some generous designers, you can get many icons for free. 12. Aroma icons A gorgeous icon set offered by Smashing Magazine. It comes with many formats and technology icons that can prove useful in the design of a portfolio. 13. Adding some holiday charm and updating your brand’s value proposition shows that you put users’ needs first and that you’ll think outside the box to make sure they’re satisfied. But the line between creating an effective holiday web design and teetering into the sea of cluttered, cliché designs is a fine one. Follow this guide of dos and don’ts to ensure that your seasonal design is a successful one. Do: Research current trends Find out what other sites are doing or have done in the past that produced solid designs and successful brand-user relationships. Take those trends further by adding your own innovate flair and considering what users would like to see carried out differently. It’s easy to get lost in the online competition fighting for users’ attention around the holidays, so find what sets your brand apart and apply that emphasis to your design.
