The simplistic, spherical pendant is one of my favorite choices for lighting a room. so the more the merrier! The Multiball system is a cloud-like cluster of different size spheres that seem to float in mid air. Perfect for larger spaces, the light compositions (available in 5, 8, or 12 spheres) can be shaped and tailored to suit any interior area.

Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2014 Is Now Open

Takashi Yamada has been a jury member of the red dot award: design concept for the past two years. As a person who has seen the inside of how it all works, trust me this is one competition you do not want to miss. Name, fame, recognition and instant key to the doors of opportunities are some of the many perks. I love Tak's interview that they captured, which can be viewed here; incase you are wondering, the backdrop is of the permanent Tupperware exhibition at the red dot museum in Singapore.

The search for the best visions, prototypes and concepts of 2014 has begun Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2014. Calling on design teams, designers, inventors, students, teachers, research institutes, design departments, architects, engineers, any one with a great design idea to take notice. The early bird submission period is open now and will end on 29 January 2014.

Some stats for the red dot awards: design concept

There were 4,394 entries submitted from 57 countries for the year 2013.
This year there are shorter timelines for submissions.
The result will be an earlier announcement of the year's best design concepts for their outstanding design quality and excellence on the 26 September 2014.

Like the name suggests, the Smart Sign Language Interpreter is a convenient device that allows hearing-impaired people to communicate with those who are can hear, using sign language. Apparently, Sign Language is the first language learned by hearing-impaired people and as a wristband device it makes use of an EMG sensor, a gyro sensor, and a distance sensor to decode hand signs. How awesome!

Small distance sensors are applied to the tips of the user's fingernails.
When a hearing-impaired person uses signs to communicate to a non-hearing-impaired person (who can not use sign language), the signs are tracked, converted into voice or text data, and sent to the recipient's smartphone.
The device also contains speakers that can transmit the voice data directly.
When a non-hearing-impaired person speaks to a hearing-impaired person, their voice is converted into text by the device, and displayed on its built-in screen.
The text can be converted into signing diagrams.

The peculiar Lampslamp is a true oddity in the world of lighting. Not just because of its ultra-flexible, even wobbly shade, but because of what’s actually inside the shade… burned out bulbs. Yes! It’s like a pink jellyfish ate your old light bulbs and now they’re permanently suspended in its belly! Strange, but definitely a statement, nonetheless!
