Smart Mug Displays Temperature, Yay or Nay?

Posted: 15 Oct 2013 01:00 AM PDT

I was browsing through my feeds yesterday morning and found this Kickstarter project that kinda turned me onto the idea of assistive tableware. Imagine plates that tell you to stop eating because you’re fat, or a rice bowl that flashes red whenever you inadvertently stick your chopsticks upright – total faux pas. The Smart Mug displays the current liquid temperature via a series of LED lights.

At first glance, I thought the idea was brilliant. Why? I drink a lot of teas and the most common categories of teas (black, red, white, green, floral) all brew and steep at different temperatures. Take for example white teas. Their delicate leaves scald and go bitter if you pour boiling water over them. Most tea houses use very hot water to brew white teas. Smart Mug can help you know when to drop in tea bags or leaves when the optimal temperature has been reached.

I immediately twittered about it but already received quite a few tweetbacks about how unattractive the design is. Some felt the LED lights looked cheap and the mug itself was aesthetically boring. To that end, I’d agree. What do you guys think?

Jony Ive & Marc Newson Team Up for (RED)

Posted: 15 Oct 2013 01:00 AM PDT

Iconic designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson aren’t two names I expect to see together on the same by-line but there they are on a one-of-a-kind desk machined from a single piece of aluminum. It almost seems like the perfect marriage – Newson’s typical swoopy/curvy lines in lieu of anything sharp in one of Ive’s favorite materials. The eye-popping table top grabs most of the attention with its oversized cellular surface pattern.

The desk was created for the (RED) auction, Sotheby’s on November 23 along with other iconic objects from Ive’s and Newson’s archives. All proceeds go to (RED), a global non-profit co-founded by U2′s Bono with a mission to prevent, treat, and hopefully one day eliminate the HIV virus.

I would love to see more of these collaborations by world-renowned designers. Imagine a collab between Nendo and Zaha Hadid. What about Lovegrove and Hubert? What other designers would create interesting combinations?
