Now this is a Jag

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 08:36 AM PDT

Without looking, take a minute to describe what you imagine a Jag looking like… chances are, you just described the classics AND the modern Jaguar XK-I concept. It’s an automotive brand that relies heavily on its name; a name originally synonymous with dramatic curves, top-notch materials, thoroughbred British performance, and overall star-quality of the earlier 50s and 60s models. It’s nice to see a Jag concept that embodies the roots of the brand when it was in its prime!

The Ultimate Couch Potato Remote

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 08:25 AM PDT

The Loupe next-gen TV remote goes beyond the capabilities of the average push-button remote, allowing the user to control every aspect of entertainment through a customizable touch-screen interface. Without interrupting what’s playing, users can search the guide, manage recordings, & access media directly from the 1136×640 resolution color display & even take photos or record video with the remote. A voice recognition option also gives the user total hands-free control so you never have to put down the popcorn!

My Affair With Korea

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 04:49 AM PDT

My affinity and bias towards Korean designers is often reflected in the articles that I wrote for Yanko Design. So you can imagine my delight when I got the chance to visit the Korean Designers' stand at the 2013 Munich Creative Business Week. Aside from the informative K-Design Talk (yes, after K-Pop its time to embrace K-Design), there were a couple of designers showcasing their works as a part of the design fest.

Organized with the help of KIDP, the clear intention of the select group was focused on simplistic innovation. My first encounter was the Message Silhouette Light, which are painted light bulbs with integrated messages. A creation of November Design, the studio manufactures and sells eco-friendly design art items. I have my in-dept review in here.

HAT ceiling light by Mars Hwasung Yoo is a playful take on everyday objects. Yoo set up the independent design studio BYMARS, based in Stockholm and now works from there.

Manifesto Design Lab is based in New York and Seoul and their innovative flatware simply floored me. Who would have thought that by adding a simple protrusion to the spoon or knife will make placing the cutlery on the table so much more hygienic.

Tackling the issue of unhygienic tabletops, Hoverware provides a simple solution that prevents the head of cutlery from touching the table.

The Xerock Kim Studio designs furniture and products that explore the relationship between man-made city and nature. Their showstopper Accumulation storage features wood with bark dyed following traditional Korean methods.

Two amazing and highly innovative products that caught my fancy were the Tavolino cushion table and Tavolino Air designed by Joo Design. The former is a comfortable cushioned table prop that allows you to eat or use the laptop right on your lap, the latter is an air-cushioned version that balloons up and deflates as per whim.

Design To Do (Seungyong SONG) has their mind set on creating everyday products in original shapes and simple, natural materials. Their works include vases made of concrete and iron and a light bedside table.

Jaekyoung Kim is one half of design duo KAMKAM and their Dressed-Up Furniture collection has already made a splash across the globe. Their method of incorporating familiar fashion elements like belts and buttons, to items of furniture, gives them a quirky edge. Crafted from leather, plywood, sponge and ash, the furniture lineup is simply amazing!

The overall vibe that the designers and the exhibition exuded was that of hope and accomplishment. It was an honor to be amongst such talented people and be a part of their dreams.

Plant Doctor

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 04:21 AM PDT

The Plant Doctor is not just any device that detects the health of your plant. It is sophisticated with tech and ensures you get the exact readings via the highly integrated micro-controller technology. The usual suspects of soil moisture, nutrition content etc. are charted easily. What makes the device even more practical is that it self powers using the electrolyte in the soil for energy. The highly sensitive soil nutrient sensor analyzes the soil and process the information.

A quick scan of the leaf with the device will also reveal information regarding the plant's health. Very awesome!

Future Of Mobile Computing

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 04:15 AM PDT

This project is called 'The Future Of Mobile Computing' and it is the conceptual exploration of potential applications of future flexible technology. To streamline the future of flexible computing we have to reconsider some of the current technology and manufacturing techniques. This means that in the future it is possible to have hardware that is interchangeable, that learns from use, which changes over time, that degrades gracefully and that works naturally.

In short, imagine a device that adapted to your use patterns over time and gives you exactly the features you needed.

Posthumus Le Corbusier Lamp Finds Life

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 12:33 AM PDT

How amazing is this story? Listen to this. The Projecteur 365 by Le Corbusier has been selected as the winner in the “Best Reissues” category of the Wallpaper Design Awards 2013. Designed by Le Corbusier for the High Court of Chandigarh in 1954, this product remained unreleased until 2012, when it was found in the archives of the Le Corbusier Foundation in Paris.

Only a side view of the design had remained. It was therefore necessary to “rebuild” its functional aesthetic, choosing finishes and details to suit the language of shipbuilding work.

Makes me wonder what other goodies are hidden in sketchbooks and pieces of scrap paper. You know what though, this lamp is actually all kinds of gorgeous. Sure the materials are modern but those lines -that’s classic baby.

Ooo La La Lighting!

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 12:01 AM PDT

The OOO lamp derives its name from the ultra-thin, perfectly circular plate that composes its shade. The swiveling shade is made possible by using a rotary joint and dual magnets that connect the tubular arm to the top and bottom plates. The result is a a sculptural lighting object with fewer parts, straightforward assembly, and easy functionality! Simply give the shade a light press to focus the light in any direction, or position it upright to hide direct light and create an ambient glow.
