Light of Distinction

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 06:01 AM PST

Drawing inspiration from Brasa, we have here an exceptionally slim and innovative rear light for cycles. The design optimizes the use of Light Line Technology (LLT), where the technique and optics clearly offset the single string of lights from the rest of the body, giving the impression that a red line is floating in the air. An easily accessible switch and simple battery removal, make it very practical and efficient light.

As the designer explains, "The LLT uses one LED only and the extra-wide shape of its light guide allows a great visibility on both corners, offering more visibility and safety for the user and other road users. An additional asset of this technology is that the power consumption is extremely low compared to other rear lights on the market. The Brasa is available in both dynamo and battery versions, with sensor (automatic) and safe-stop functions. Customization of the glass mask and the housing are possible on demand.

The Light Line Technology of the Brasa has one single LED, which consumes 23 mA only. This brings the autonomy of the battery versions up to 160h."

Trendy Braille Eyewear

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 04:13 AM PST

The Braille Sight concept is simple and fashioned as trendy eyewear. The system captures images using the glasses frames (Frame of Sight) and then syncs it to the lenses (Braille Pad) as tactile images in Braille. The wearer can comfortably "see" their surroundings, in spite of being sight impaired. The only issue I can think about here, is the response that the tactile system has to the ever changing landscape. What do you say?

Braille Sight is a 2011 red dot design concept winner.

Manly Modern Timepiece

I like my watches like I like my lovers- on time and looking good! Seriously though, I prefer a sleek, minimal yet masculine design that will achieve those two simple things. The Lepidus collection is for the purist who knows what they want. In carbon, steel and platinum finishes, this is a modern man’s watch through and through. Just look at this hunk wearing it!

Lovely Layers

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 12:03 AM PST

Originally designed as a base for a salvaged piece of glass, the Lofting Table merges creative construction methods with classic style that has a subtle nautical feel. The name is derived from the traditional lofting technique used to plot curves in boat-building; an unusual method for the construction of a timber table. Using a combination of 3D CAD technology & the simple jointing method, the construction is based around laminating horizontal layers together to form a single complex 3D geometry.

A series of straight edged plywood chords combine to describe a complex shape formed by the extrusion between a straight line (at the table base) and a curved-edged top. The separate plywood pieces are laminated (via dowels) together by hand to form a continuous, composite surface, which extends the layered surface effect of the exposed plywood lamina. Once all pieces are combined, the shape gives the table an overall stability which allows for the thinness of the members.

3D CAD software was used to establish the form, which was then sliced into strips to suit the plywood thickness and exported as 2D information to drive a CNC router. The shape of the pieces means that they can be nested within sheets of plywood to minimise cutting wastage. The table is hand-finished and sealed with a natural wax to enhance the exposed plywood grain.

Sanitary Street Dogs

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 12:01 AM PST

Big cities (like Los Angeles, where I live) are known for their street hot dogs, but I’ve avoided ever trying one because I can’t get over wondering where the heck those guys wash their hands?! For germophobes like me, the Rango Hot Dog Stand was designed with hygiene in mind. It utilizes special food compartments and hands-free condiment dispensers that allow the “building” of the dogs to be done without ever touching the food. It also has a small sink for washing hands!
