Dog Accessories Designed by Nendo

Posted: 17 Oct 2013 10:51 AM PDT

Heads or Tails is by far the best looking set of doggy accessories I’ve seen. A three-piece collection, consisting of a dog bed, dishes and toys. The artificial leather bed becomes a little hut when dogs burrow inside it, and a cushion when they lie on top. The ceramic dishes are reversible, with a shallow dish for food on one side and a deeper dish for water on the other, and the silicon rubber 'bone' can be reshaped into a ball by tucking in the two ends.

Okay, for serious. Dogs could care less what their “accessories” look like so this is obviously a play for indulgent and style-minded owners. Almost all dog accessories veer towards the cute so it’s nice to see something so outside the proverbial box. I’d buy it. I’d totally buy it whether or not my dog hates it because it looks so damn good. And that reversible bone/ball thing? BRILLS MAN! THAT’S JUST BRILLS!

FlyKly Smart Wheels Gives Your Bike an Electric Boost

Posted: 17 Oct 2013 10:33 AM PDT

Move through busy city streets in no time and spare your energy with the help of Smart Wheel, a pedal assist that encases an ultra-thin electric motor and intelligent electronics within a robust housing, neatly fitted onto the spokes of a bicycle rim. It fits practically any bicycle frame and helps you use your bike more efficiently and comfortably, when and where you need it.

Smart Wheel's genius design packs a lot of power and keeps its weight as light as possible. It goes up to 20 mph (25 km/h) for a 30 miles (50 km) range and it weights only 9 lbs (4 kg). You can control the Smart Wheel with the FlyKly App which offers additional features for safety, support and social connectivity. See your battery levels, current speed and also track your bike if it gets stolen, but there’s more! It also charges your phone via USB. BOOM!

Want it? Make sure it gets funded!

Scanning At Your Finger Tips

Posted: 17 Oct 2013 05:51 AM PDT

The Finger Scanner is a barcode scanner that you can put on your finger and scan stuff at the grocery store. The idea is to reduce the wait time at the checkout line and get billing done more efficiently. Besides the high cool-quotient, I like the progressive nature of this design. Minimal and functional!

The Joy of Biking

Posted: 17 Oct 2013 05:40 AM PDT

Flexi-Bike poses a challenge to design thinkers and engineers, but in a very good and creative way. Sporting an informative LED display, the bike is quite whimsical in its style and approach. I am not sure how feasible this design is, but for sure it is thought provoking and bound to bring about a healthy debate. So what are you waiting for… bring it on….let me know your thoughts; yay or nay?

Candid With Ken Koo – What is Design Thinking?

Posted: 17 Oct 2013 05:13 AM PDT

You best know him as the man behind the red dot awards – concept design, Singapore, however I know Ken Koo as the visionary behind many design initiatives across this island country. We almost lost him to the world of finance, with his degree in accountancy; Ken began his career with numbers. But like they say … Accenture's loss is now the design fraternity's gain! I hope to turn my many conversations with Ken into a bustling series, and that you readers and I can pick his brains on topics related to the business of design.

I kickstart this episode with the ever imposing question about Design Thinking!

Me:

A lot of talk is there about design thinking and how it helps both designer and entrepreneurs. Ken, if you were to explain what Design Thinking is to a common person with zero design background, then how will you explain it?

Ken:

Design Thinking is a set of tools and methods to help one break free of preconceived ideas and notions. It provides ways to observe understand and derive innovative ideas on how to solve a problem or achieve an objective.

One key tool is ethnography, which we can use to observe the customers, space, interaction etc, in order to reveal latent needs and issues. As always, you never can really get the real picture just by listening to your clients. If they would have known the exact problem or opportunity, they would have embarked on it already.

As a designer, the tool helps us organize the mess of data into meaningful observation. Techniques to derive innovative solutions and approaches like “rule bending” challenges norms and open up minds to create new ideas…

Me:

After you have sorted out the design thinking process, and you present to your client the solutions, what is the best way to make a compelling presentation; any tips?

Ken:

What is the best way to make a compelling presentation? Ultimately, what will make the client make serious efforts to implement any solutions is how it impacts the business’s profitability. You cannot just present what it (your design solution) can do for the client design wise. Many clients cannot fully appreciate it in that way. But if you also present how it might impact the business, its profitability, client retention, cost reduction, market expansion etc. then you have nailed it right!

2013 Electrolux Design Lab Winner Announced!!

Posted: 17 Oct 2013 03:24 AM PDT

That’s all folks! The 2013 Electrolux Design Lab has officially wrapped! Over 1700 designers put their concepts to the test, and only 8 of the most talented prevailed to go on to the grand final in Stockholm, Sweden. But only ONE would emerge to snag the title, some cash, and a year’s worth of bragging rights! And… the moment you’ve all been waiting for….

Mab steals the top spot AND the People’s Choice award!!!!!

EDL 2013 Winner Adrian Perez Zapata takes home €5000 and a 6 month paid internship at an Electrolux Global Design Center of his choice!!

The concept is an automated cleaning system consisting of hundreds of flying mini-robots. The robots clean surfaces by touching them with a drop of water. Mab scans the house, determines the areas to clean and sends the robots flying.

2nd Place goes to Luiza Silva for her concept, Atomium- a 3D printer that uses molecular ingredients to construct food layer by layer. Users draw the shape of the food they’d like to eat and show it to the appliance. Atomium scans the image and prints food in the desired shape.

Last but not least, 3rd Place goes to Jeabyun Yeon for his Breathing Wall concept – a wall integrated air cleaning concept which pulsates and changes shape as it cleans the air. It can be customized to suit individual needs as it also scents the air you breathe and changes color according to your mood.

A HUGE congrats from YD to ALL of this year’s finalists!! Check out all 8 finalist designs here! For a full gallery of the event, visit our Facebook.

What’s new in EDL this year?

For the 2013 Design Lab, Electrolux asked current design students, and for the first time ever, recent graduates to put their ideas for Inspired Urban Living to the test. Over 1700 hopefuls from 60 countries submitted concepts in one of three categories: Social Cooking, Natural Air, and Effortless Cleaning. By broadening both the eligible contestants as well as the brief, Electrolux really upped the ante. But in return, this year they provided step-by-step guidance in the design process from seasoned Electrolux professionals.

The hands-on assistance from these experts is not only highly visible in the 8 final concepts, but is also reflected in the designer’s presentations and confidence when faced with tough questions from the Electrolux jury. It was a genius addition to the competition that emersed competitors in a design process akin to one they might experience while working at Electrolux, and according to this year’s finalists, it also proved to be their favorite part of the competition. (Besides all the free booze, fancy food, paparazzi, partying, and swanky Stockhom hotel of course!) Now… more photos!!
