Form Follows Function, Maybe!

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 08:55 AM PDT

Gotto love the cheeky tagline of the 3F Concept Vacuum Cleaner, it says 'Form Follows Function.' Given that Yanko Design believes that 'Form Beyond Function', the debate surrounding this vacuum's form and function, can get quite heated! To tie it up for you, the Triple”F" is a cleaner that it cleans, disinfects and freshens the air in your home.

The inspiration for this vacuum comes from ballet dancing: while at work it resembles a skirt, floating gracefully over your floor. Thanks to the different built-in filters, you can interchange the scented filters to get the aroma of your choice.

Features:

  • When the vacuum is OFF, it stands erect to avoid wastage of space in compact apartments.
  • When it is ON, it extends its base to gain better stability and a wider working surface.
  • The 3F cleaner is fully autonomous and can even reach its charging base on its own.
  • It can be controlled via smartphones and tablets, so that the user can ensure cleanliness remotely.

The Marshall (yes, as in the amp maker!) Dicycle combines the functionalities of two unexpected pairs in one wild cycle design that parties on the go! The side-by-side wheels support Marshall amps for impromptu, plug-and-play concerts! Hit the jump to watch the show!

Zero Illumination

If you had to rethink the flashlight, what design would you try to evolve it to? André Duarte has brought in a whole new dimension as far orientation goes. The 0 Light can be held in the palm of your hand and beam up the lights to any direction. It's like this little object in your hand that is lined with powerful LEDs. Interesting form for a seemingly basic object.

solidThinking Evolve® 9.5 – A New Level of Modeling Control

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 02:11 AM PDT

My initiation into the design community began more as a content writer than as a design enthusiast. Typical design jargons like renders, 3D modeling and cropping were alien words for me. I guess I never fully understood how these words could become the differentiating factor between a good design and great design. In due course, I learnt my lesson and my respect for designers grew and I also learnt that solidThinking was not just constructive thinking but also a vital tool for designers.

In 2000, solidThinking became the first company to offer industrial designers NURBS-based 3D modeling software for both the OS X and Windows operating systems. User experience has certified that the community just loves them. No wonder they have such humungous support that is driven by the value of the software's organic surfacing, construction history, and integrated rendering in a single package.

The latest release of the software, solidThinking Evolve 9.5, let's users work in the most natural and unrestricted fashion yet, enabling faster creation of complex products. Apparently solidThinking Evolve features tools to simplify geometry creation and makes editing more intuitive. Even the unique ConstructionTree history feature is now stronger and more elegantly presented.

solidThinking Evolve offers ongoing support to users on OS X, and the company has also added a new 64-bit Windows version that maximizes efficiency in managing large files.

As an industrial designer, if you wish to develop forms faster, using either a Windows PC or Mac, then Evolve is the one for you. It captures an initial sketch, then allows exploration of styling alternatives and the visualization of products with high quality renderings generated in real time.

It combines the modeling freedom of organic surfaces and the control of parametric solids with a unique ConstructionTree history feature.

Essentially, if you are looking for freedom from the constraints of engineering-oriented CAD tools, while allowing the export of digital models required by others in the product development process, then think of Evolve as the tool for you.

solidThinking recently announced the release of solidThinking Inspire® 9.5 and if you want to know more about this software and details about upcoming events, connect with solidThinking through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Timbre Timber

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 12:01 AM PDT

Timbre, by Casey Lin, trims the essence of the speaker down to the bare minimum, allowing the inherent qualities of the materials to become the focal point of the design. With superfluous elements stripped away, all that remain visible are glass and wood, chosen for their enhanced acoustic qualities. Placing different objects on the raw wood block instantly changes the sound, encouraging user interaction and a deeper connection to the object. Jump to the video to hear how it works!

Surface transducers are mounted on the interior of the wooden box, vibrating the surface and turning the box into a speaker. The glass vessels act as physical equalizers, where the vibrations transfer through the wood into the glass and changes the timbre of the sound. The wooden box can act as a standalone speaker, or alternatively, vessels of other material, size or shape can be placed on the speaker to change the sound according to the users taste.

Pod Train

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 12:01 AM PDT

Inspired by those awesome Japanese capsule hotels, the JIYUKŪKAN high speed rail system packs personal pod modules in which travelers can sleep, relax or just hang out on the 500-800 mile journey. Like the capsule hotels, each train packs a number of showers so users are well-rested and fresh-faced when they arrive at their destination. Passengers can get on with their day upon arriving without the lag feeling of lost time!
