Posted: 08 Nov 2012 09:33 AM PST Children are stubborn and they don't understand that viewing the computer (or TV) screen from too near a distance can affect their eyesight. As a victim of wearing glasses right from the eight grade, I have learnt this the hard way too. So designers Zhichao Xue & Chen Yizi have a very clever solution at hand. Place the I-CARE sensor on top of any screen and it keeps a check on the distance from which a person is viewing the screen. When the distance is less than 50 cm, the screen blurs up, forcing the person to step back for a crystal clear display. I-CARE uses the human instinct rather than the preaching of the parents, and it can make the children take the initiative to adjust to the appropriate distance, so as to protect their eyes. Translucent Seclusion, Live in a Bubble Posted: 08 Nov 2012 02:06 AM PST This is the second project from Swiss design group Micasa Lab that I’m in love with. The Cocoon 1 is a sit in, chill in, relax in, live in bubble with reconfigurable cushions to really personalize the space. I think it’s a genius idea. A retreat that simultaneously informs the world of your need for solitude while giving you full access to the world around you. Plus, this revives memories of that terrible excellent movie Bubble Boy about a man born without an immune system so he has to live inside a bubble. Good stuff. Posted: 08 Nov 2012 12:01 AM PST The Volkswagen Expand is a super-versatile concept vehicle that offers not 1 but 2 functional expansions that make it the perfect urban commuter. The first is an extendable cabin that accommodates 1 or 2 additional passengers or extra cargo. The second is the car’s removable front wheels which double as personal transportation using a sophisticated gyroscopic sensor system similar to a Segway. It’s a limitless, all-in-one solution for getting around the urban jungle! Designer: Luiz Antonelli - Related posts: |
Posted: 08 Nov 2012 12:01 AM PST We recently featured Justin Chong’s charming, super-minimal Cube home… well he’s back with an alternative version that reworks the usable space to accommodate more storage, sleeping room, a full bathroom and even a laundry area fit with a compact clothes washer/dryer combo! The other design was a lil dark so the most significant addition is built-in, ultra-thin LED lighting accents in inconspicuous places like under the stairs or kitchen shelving. Posted: 08 Nov 2012 12:01 AM PST Designed from highly sustainable bamboo, the Lock table’s shape is formed by taking advantage of the material’s natural bending curve. The layers of bamboo become intertwined at the center, locking in place to form a secure and aesthetically intriguing base. Nature and geometry come together to create a dynamic shape that is beautiful, functional and environmentally concious! The top is made out of 40 mm. thick solid bamboo that is cut into a layer-pattern that forms the round edges Bamboo is a strong flexible beautiful and renewable material. Bamboo grows without the help of fertilizers. The bamboo tree is mature enough to be cut after three years. The trees are processed into the most environmentally sustainable wood on Earth.
