Organic Essentialism Perfected

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 09:43 AM PST

Following designer Ross Lovegrove’s self-described “organic essentialism” style, Sara Vaz’s Natura chair takes inspiration from materials and shapes in nature, applying them to create unique, organic pieces. Specifically, the Natura was inspired by a two-petaled leaf, the form of which is apparent in its light, bisected halves. Composed entirely of plywood and a small metal reinforcement inside the back, the design consists of just 3 pieces: seat, back and front legs.

Backup Power Portable

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 08:44 AM PST

I consider apps as a necessary evil, I need them to be productive and at the same time they drain my iPhone at the most unexpected times. A power backup or portable recharger has become a compulsion for people like me. However design sensibilities often keep me away from dodgy chargers that juice up the iPhone and iPod but at the cost of ugly looks. When I spied the clever Plug Battery Charger, I was totally tickled by its take on the plug! Sweet!

Voice Memo With Benefits

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 01:11 AM PST

Vmo is quite a clever way of combining Voice Memos with QR Codes and Smartphones. Basically its a way to mark and capture data, be it voice or visual, and then revisit it at a later date. Essentially this means, if you are in class and taking notes, you may also want to record the lecture, so you tab and the recording using a supplied QR Code Sticker (that nestles sweetly in an allocated space in the smaprtphone jacket), scanning the code and readily accessing it later. The video below explains it all.

The designers explain, "The market strategy is to set a range of Vmo sticker prices depending on the file size (i.e. length of voice recording). In a nutshell, we actually sell the web space bit by bit, which store the info or voice on the net. Cloud service plays the main role behind the scene. We view cloud service as a potential market. Focus on realizing users' dreams and let them "taste" vocal memories wherever they are, whenever they want by means of cloud service connection. Vmo is not merely an amazing product design but a whole new cloud service design strategy."

USE:

  • Step 1: Write the info on the Vmo.
  • Step 2: Stick Vmo on your stuff.
  • Step 3: Record the voice and scan the code.

Herbed Windows

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 01:01 AM PST

Herbow is a rain shelter and a window herb garden. A very unique and unconventional combination, but one that works! Given the way counties like Japan have been upping their efforts in going green by growing creepers and other such plants on their building's external walls, to lower internal temperatures and conserving electricity, these kind of gardens suit the urban landscape perfectly.

Herbow is a window planter 'tray' that enables people to grow small crops outside their windows while shielding their interior space from the rain. By swinging Herbow upwards, it becomes a window shelter that blocks the harsh sunlight and the rain. At the same time, the plants are watered and grow naturally. An eave has been designed to extend over the shelter to stop water falling through the gap between Herbow and the window frame. Holes on two sides of Herbow allow for drainage of excess water.

Herbow is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winner.

Chic and Consious Toothbrushes

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 12:01 AM PST

Gotta love these custom toothbrushes by Yumaki! The series of 3 includes: KIRI- a steam pressed bamboo handle with burnmark, FURUI KAME, a faux tortoise shell handle with metal badge, and KICKFLIP, a biodegradable sugar cane plastic handle with lasered texture. Each brush also utilizes antibacterial bamboo charcoal blended nylon bristles for extended lifespan and enhanced hygiene. Do want! But wait there’s more…

The FURUI KAME style is completely random and every handle has a completely unique pattern. But our QC goes through every single handle and picks out only the best looking patterns to put in the range. The toothbrushes that are less aesthetically on point (but still high quality) are donated to third-world orphans. Some styles are more difficult to get right than others and therefore more are donated. More than 1 and a half toothbrushes are donated for every toothbrush sold.

The KICKFLIP brush  with the sugar cane plastic handle takes about 6-8 months to biodegrade in a regular compost, but since bristles still are made in nylon (as with the KIRI bamboo toothbrush), the head should be cut off (and thrown away) before starting the decomposing process. (To speed up the process, the handle can be cut up in smaller pieces.)

Yumaki also offers an ultra-thin toothpick! 1/4th the size of a normal toothpick, it is cut directly from the branch of a special type of bamboo with extremely thin branches which makes it very flexible. It is the closest an organic toothpick can come to being floss since it is so thin it can go straight between teeth.

Modular at Heart

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 12:01 AM PST

The Alteia day boat concept might look like your average sailing vessel… crisp, clean and ready for the weekend, but it’s what’s inside that sets it apart. The design features a modular interior that can be easily transformed to suit the needs of the user. Designed primarily for chartering, the versatile interior makes it possible to cater to different clients based on their preference and intended use. Choose between entertainment, race-ready, and comfy modes!
