The nCredible nCycle

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 09:43 AM PST

Don’t be deceived by the nCycle’s minimal aesthetic- it’s actually loaded with tons of extras & innovative features that set a new standard for future e-bikes. The design scraps the classic tubular structure for a sleeker, lightweight, hollow-bodied shell that protects the inner electric drive system. Other features include a built-in pocket for small cargo, a bar-mounted locking system, integrated headlights & speakers, & even a holographic display. Check it out!

nPower:
An optional electric drive version is available where the vehicle is partly aided by a rear hub-mounted electric motor. The drive power battery is located inside the body, starting from the seat and up to the pedals hub. The structure not only offers natural shell protection to the battery, but being metallic, it also provides substantia cooling, increasing performance and battery life.

nFold:
Usually, folding bikes are clumsy, and somehow look odd and chunky, especially at the hinge. Cool, sporty, foldables hardly make it into production. Thanks to its special “sandwich” structure, the nCycle can be folded in two seconds and stay sturdy without showing any aesthetic or aerodynamic handicaps with operated. The body is split in half at the location between the seat and pocket. A pair of rails is attached on both structure parts and the hinge is made to slide along those rails. Folding the bicycle involves just three steps: unlocking the rail, sliding both ends to uncover the hinge, and folding.

nLock:
An integrated locking system represents the best blend of safety, portability, lightness and ease of use. Doing away with cables, most of the system consists of the handle bar itself. With dual handles for multiple riding positions and comfort, the handle bar is appropriately loop-shaped to fit most poles and steel bars available in the city. When closed, the hardened steel loop is virtually impossible to break or cut with any kind of manual tools. The process of locking and unlocking is also much quicker and simpler- simply embrace the pole with the handle, pull the tube from one handle and click it inside the other.

nPocket:
Most bike baskets are bulky and ugly, but the nCycle’s retractable pocket between its two metal plates allows it to disappear completely when not in use. When in use, it is just slightly visible under the belly of the shell. Tied to two rigid folding arms, the support of the pocket makes it foldable, flexible, but also unbendable while turning and tilting the bike.

Headlights & Speakers:
Manually-controlled headlights and Bluetooth speakers are powered by the main battery. Built in to the handlebar structure, they are also theft proof.

Electronic System:
An optional app-operated holographic display replaces a bracket for a smartphone,  providing a display directly on the handle bar to give the rider improved and safer visibility. The various functions of the app can be accessed by sliding the thumbs back and forth on touch sensitive zones near the handles without removing the hands completely.

Good Design = Best IDEA! 2013 Registrations Are Open

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST

For more than three decades (33 to be precise) IDSA and IDEA Awards have stood for awarding excellence in the field of products, sustainability, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research and concept design. The 2013 registrations are now open with the Early Bird phase coming to an end pretty soon. What I really like about this award is that IDSA goes the extra mile to ensure designers get adequate exposure through exhibitions and tours. Last year they had one in Boston and one in Korea.

For 2012, IDSA took it upon themselves to relay the message that "Good design is the basis for improved products, better business and a richer life."

Every year some of the most innovative and thought-provoking products and concepts come out of the IDEA competition crowned as gold winners. These projects always leave us craving more information about the approach, their inspiration and what made them stand out from the other entries each category. IDSA has compiled an exclusive Q&As that addresses these queries in what they call "IDEA Insights" for 2012. Have a look.

Important Dates:

  • Regular application deadline – Feb. 11, 2013, 11:59 PM PST
  • Late application deadline – Feb. 25, 2013, 11:59 PM PST

Time For The Nokia Pad

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 01:11 AM PST

So we have the Apple and Samsung stables feeding us tablets at a steady pace. And its sad to see one company that ruled the roost, i.e. Nokia, get derailed off the tracks. So if we let our imagination run wild (or rather Jupeng Zhai's) then this is how the next-gen Nokia Lumia Pad will look like. Not many concepts dedicated to Nokia these days, however this is one of those good ones.

Button Down Better

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 01:01 AM PST

Ever been flustered by a broken or missing button right when you are ready to walk out the door? Ah, we have all been through this at one point in our lives. For those like me who detest sewing, the Pin Button is a good option. A plastic button is superimposed upon a metal pin, which you need to push in and secure (as shown in the video), thus releasing you from the clutches of needle and thread! Yes, this pin button is my savior!

Ultra-Compact Car Share

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 12:01 AM PST

The Citi.Transmitter is a versatile urban-transportation concept that expands on the shared-vehicle solution by offering a mix of eco-friendly modular units for a variety of needs. Using an innovative smart-hitch system, users can easily attach modules to the primary 2-wheeled car to carry more passengers or cargo. About a 4th of the size of standard cars, the ultra-compact vehicle makes getting around heavily congested cities a cinch!

Water Filter Too Beautiful To Hide

Posted: 02 Jan 2013 01:01 PM PST

The Soma is by far the most beautiful water filter to date. The pitcher looks more like a carafe which in my mind is more inviting to drink from, not to mention the minimalist design makes it perfect to leave out on the counter. The Soma addresses a number of issues I have with other filters. It’s made of glass. There’s no flap on the lid to easily break off and the filtration system is made of coconut shells, silk, and PLA plastic.

If there’s a question on whether or not this is as effective as carbon, the filter was designed by David Beeman, THE man when it comes to filtering water. With 30 years experience in the industry, he’s created filtration systems for Starbucks, Peets and other global brands.

The company claims water actually tastes more crisp compared to traditional carbon filters. We haven’t tried it ourselves since it’s a Kickstarter project but with 9 days left, there’s still plenty of time to get you hands on one for less than what it will probably cost retail.
