Braille Bracelet For Independent Train Travel Posted: 19 Jul 2012 07:48 AM PDT The Metro Dot is a bracelet type transportation card in Braille for the visually impaired. It relays information like your subway station and how many more stations to go before your stop arrives. The bracelet transmits vibrations to let the user know when to get off the train. The interface uses a technique called EAP (Electro Active Polymer) to make a 3 dimensional pattern with electronic signals. The electronic signals are sent to the surface raising the constant magnet to make a Braille pattern on the silicon rubber surface. Through this technical method, information such as the subway destination and how many stops are left can be alerted. The designers explain, "The destination and train travel information are transmitted to the subway through the rail tracks, used as a conductor, sent from the TCC (Train Control Computer) in between stations. The Metro Dot is able to provide station location information by catching a series of electronic signals that are being sent to the subway’s receiver antenna." Metro Dot is a 2012 IDEA Award entry. Posted: 19 Jul 2012 12:03 AM PDT Futuristic crossover styling meets space-age materials in Marianna Merenmies’ 3-passenger concept, “eXtremes.” It’s is an exploration into the use of Aerogel, a material often used in space exploration, as a lightweight, insulating automotive shell. The material, which is 99.8% gas, can be used for insulation against severe temperatures in areas like the Siberian Tundra that are susceptible to extreme weather. Posted: 19 Jul 2012 12:02 AM PDT This striking desk design is the latest addition to the Incunabular range of handmade contemporary furniture by UK-based design studio, invisiblecity. The design takes its dimensions and ratios from the international paper standard ISO 216, Series A. The geometric rationale behind the entire series is the square root of 2, which maintains the aspect ratio of each subsequent module. Not a math whiz? No worries- all you really need to know is that a lot of thought went into this gorgeous piece! Designer: invisiblecity - Related posts: |
Posted: 19 Jul 2012 12:01 AM PDT The essence of the iconic rocking horse is instantly recognizable in this minimal twist by Remko Verhaagen and Stephen Boom for Blooey. Maybe not as comfortable as the original style, but it’s easy to produce, ship and put together. It might not look anything like the rocking horse that you and I grew up with, but modern design-minded kids and parents will love it!
