In Love With The Sonneman Quattro Posted: 05 Apr 2013 10:36 AM PDT We’ve reviewed our share of LED task lamps but our latest procurement, the Sonneman Quattro, evokes a kind of playful spirit normally reserved for Luxo, the Pixar Lamp. The lamp is immaculately engineered. The aforementioned playful spirit comes from the retangular arm that articulates at multiple points. It freely rotates 90ยบ at the base with two additional pivot points across the arm. Devoid of any discernable switches, the lamp is switched on by a feather’s touch above the LED plate. Tapping it multiple times cycles through 3 brightness settings. I’m not at all surprised by the fit and finish. Designed by Robert Sommeman, a name many of you design enthusiasts will be familiar with, a force in lighting design for over 40 years. It’s the attention to detail that really struck me. For example, the lighting elements consists of a flat LED plate that throws an even warm light. Most other lamps use an array of LEDs. Not to say one is better than the other, it’s just different and that’s why I like the Quattro. The Quattro is available in bright satin aluminum, white, black and a red/yellow/black combination which is the one I received. It’s particularly special because the rectilinear forms and coloring serves up Mondrian and Rietveld – true modernists. The lamp retails for $575 with an estimated lamp life of 50,000 hours. Posted: 05 Apr 2013 08:50 AM PDT Accidents in speed skating are dangerous for everyone. A skater who falls basically becomes a razor-sharp ninja star, just as liable to be struck by other skaters as to hit someone else. Unfortunately, this sport’s helmet style hasn’t undergone much change over the years and existing designs tend to be uncomfortable and less practical for both safety and aerodynamics. See how this smashable, strapless, uber-cool design works. —- The challenge was to make the athlete faster and safer, but also improve air circulation without going outside the rules of the sports. Personal research has also shown that the chinstrap is uncomfortable for the athlete. Mock-ups tested on the athlete also showed measurable improvements in comfort and performance once the helmet adapted a strapless design. It improves aerodynamics through an innovative flexible structure, which allows an active crumble zone. This crumble zone can absorb the impact and then goes back into its actual shape. New protective materials absorb the force of the impact rather than distributing it. Designer: Mathias Hintermann - Related posts: |
Posted: 05 Apr 2013 12:45 AM PDT Ever since last year’s acquisition of Ducati Motors by German auto giant Audi, people have been speculating as to what exactly might spawn from this moto(r) merger. French designer Thibault Devauze, in collaboration with his brother Marc Devauze and modeler Clement Couvreur, have conjured up the Audi Motorrad. A clear shot at rival BMW’s Motorrad motorcycle group. This forward thinking design is packed with a Ducati-derived 850cc, L-Twin cylinder, 4 valve per cylinder, Desmodromic 2-cylinder engine coupled with a double clutch gearbox. The body uses Audi's Ultra lightweighting technology, with a combination of carbon fiber and light alloys. Designer: Thibault Devauze - Related posts: |

Posted: 05 Apr 2013 12:01 AM PDT When it comes to lighting, there’s something about spherical white shades that just makes sense. Simple, yet expressive, they permit omnidirectional lighting and also make for a great diffuser. Creative Pill’s ORB lamps capitalize on this very character and practicality but with a twist. The table and floor lamps 3 legs appear to pierce the sphere, using it as a stabilizer for the tripodal structure. Simple and creative, they’re an easy addition to any contemporary space. From a manufacturing and assembly point of view, the ORB is kept really simple. The 3 aluminum feet are all the same in order to cut production costs. The inner metal component keeps the whole assembly together. By screwing the feet in, the two glass halves are kept in place with no pressure on the glass component. The inner metal component also acts as support for the light bulb fixture or LED system. Access to the inner components is easily facilitated by removing the top glass sphere half which is easily removed by unscrewing the upper aluminum components. Posted: 05 Apr 2013 12:01 AM PDT Stone is a project that looks at how induction cooking hobs could be used to power everyday kitchen appliances like toasters and kettles, as well as how induction cooking could improve everyday cooking instruments such as grills and saucepans. The result is an aesthetic and functional evolution of cookware that is made of sustainable porcelain and birch, completely wireless, free of electrical components, and capable of being served directly from the stove to the table!
