Posted: 12 Dec 2012 09:46 AM PST We’re loving this gothic-influenced stool, appropriately named… Venom. It looks more like a creature out of a bizarre Tim Burton world than a piece of furniture! In designing it, Jurmol Yao experimented with various surface changes to the carbon fiber material and ultimately utilized origami folds to achieve its sci-fi style. It’s a little menacing and a lot futuristic, perfect for those with modern spaces that aren’t afraid of something a little scary and wild. Designer: Jurmol Yao - Related posts: |
Posted: 12 Dec 2012 01:11 AM PST OMG, I love this Integrated Workstation not because it is a sleek and well-organized desk, but because it integrates a very thoughtful daybed datum into the workstation typology. The desk is more than just a space to work, it provides place to charge tablets, laptops, and cell phones. It even encourages a range of postures throughout the day. The best part is that the design doesn't take up much space. Ah, my next power nap has to be on this! The Integrated Workstation was designed for Herman Miller and resulted from a partnership between Cranbrook Academy of Art and Herman Miller. Designer: Matthew Plumstead - Related posts: |
Posted: 12 Dec 2012 01:01 AM PST The traditional door catch is still being used in many countries. Although simple to use, the design has two major flaws. Because of its orientation, the catch tends to get in the way and hurt people and as a result, it bends and gets deformed. The simple solution is to change the vertical hinge to a 45° angle. This ways the moving latch hangs down flush with the door (thanks to gravity) and doesn't come in the way. And like the design team puts it, "Safety is ensured and the lifespan of the latch is extended." 45° Door Catch is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winner. Posted: 12 Dec 2012 12:01 AM PST NOTEX is a thoughtful wristband design that’s more than a funky fashion statement- it’s also a helpful tool that allows visually impaired individuals identify paper money. Designed exclusively for the people of India, the steel slap band features four kinks arranged according to the difference in the lengths of Indian rupee bills, which lack Braille or any other tactile identification. Simply snap it off and line the bills up with the end to make out the money and then snap it back on – genius! - Related posts: |
Posted: 12 Dec 2012 12:01 AM PST The Quakescape 3D Fabricator was created in response to the Christchurch earthquakes by Kiwi designer James Boock. The device takes earthquake data and transfers it into art by using a scaled down landscape of Christchurch as a “blank canvas” and extrudes paint onto the exact location of the earthquake tremors – transforming the data into functional art. Check the vid after the jump to see it in action! The device works by taking earthquake data from the site Geo-net (www.geonet.com) and transfers it into the medium of art by using paint and Arduino technology. The surface that the paint is applied to is a CNC-routed landscape of Christchurch, New Zealand. This acts as the blank canvas and allows the paint to move around the landscape creating an amazingly vibrant visual. Each color represent the various magnitudes of the tremors and is run on two horizontal axis by stepper motors powered by G-code generated through Arduino. This allows the nozzle head to be moved to the precise location of the earthquake. Once the location is determined the pigment is then pumped from the containers through the tubes and extruded out the nozzle. This is the moment where precise magnitudinal data is converted into an art-form.
