Gum Power

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 05:39 AM PDT

Poor Singapore, chewing gum is banned in that country so I suppose they may never get to experience the Chewing Gum Battery Concept! It is a simple and innovative idea where paper battery is kept charged at a solar empowered dispensing station, and can be easily used for gadgets whose battery dies out unexpectedly. I suppose it is intended for tourist places or maybe college campus, but it sure is a neat way to get instant power.

Chewing Gum Battery is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Making ‘Make Do and Mend’ Fashionable

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 05:30 AM PDT

I have my moments of fighting the needle and thread, trying to mend some ripped clothes, but they always seem to get the better of me. Simply put I HATE mending clothes and much rather replace them with new than pick and odd stitch. I know its wasteful, but unless someone makes it easy for me…simple as the Alto Sewing Machine, I ain't fixing another ripped stitch!

As the designer explains, "to simplify threading, a metal guide runs from reel to needle for the user to follow. Speed is controlled by pressing with the fingers through the fabric and the patented force sensor technology in a rubber foot underneath the machine allows the beginner to control speed from whichever hand position they find most comfortable. A flexible drive shaft replaces the traditional pulley system to form Alto's distinctive arch, increasing room for the fabric and improving visibility of the sewing area."

This Stool Rocks

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 12:01 AM PDT

I’m loving the latest design from Snapp: the Orbit stool. The captivating design taps into our natural tendency to move and shift. Taking inspiration from the spinning top, it features a slightly pointed cork base so you can rotate on its spinning axis and wiggle all you want. For light reading, the tapered drum cushion also has a slim cavity on the side for storing magazines or books. Do want!

Way Sexier than a Hearing Aid

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 12:01 AM PDT

In an extraordinary fusing of textiles and robotics, the Flutter functional garment was design to aid individuals with hearing impairments “feel” the sounds of the world around them. Within the cotton and polyester dress lies an inner framework of microphones and vibrating leaflets that detect the direction of sound. Leaflets nearest the sound are triggered to flutter in that direction, giving the wearer an alternative sensory awareness of their surroundings.

Twist on Turkish Cookware

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The Beatoven is a modern interpretation of the traditional Turkish drum furnace that differs from other heavy, bulky and hard-to-use versions. Space is saved with its unique construction where the heating units are placed on both the top and bottom and the electrical cable can be stored within the oven when not in use. A touch-sensitive interface, customizable user profiles, and preset temperature/cook-time options make it much easier to use.

Jump From Paper Bags Are For Real

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 12:46 PM PDT

Yes they’re for real. How do I know? I’ve seen them in person. Jump From Paper bags just released several new products and STILL I have a hard time believe they exist. I mean that in the tangible sense because every photo looks like a doctored up shot. That’s part of the charm. It’s like your touching a cartoon every time you reach for your bag. In fact, wouldn’t be cool if have the world were a cartoon we could interact with? Cool World much?

Two Beautiful Products From 11+

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 12:24 PM PDT

I often go into one of those modes when I do nothing but look for the hottest products around the world. Literally weeks on end of just surfing the net, contacting studios and manufacturers. I came across a new Korean studio called 11+ who are about to launch two products – a case for the MacBook Air or any tablet sized device and a case for the Samsung Galaxy S III. Hit the jump.

The Felt Case reminds me of Hard Graft but this feels lighter – effortless whereas the Hard Graft cases/bags feel quite engineered. Neither is better, just different strokes for different folks. It’s made mostly of felt designed to hold an iPad, MacBook Air, Galaxy Tab or any device within those dimensions. I’m particularly fond of how the offset sleeve provides a perfect surface for an external mouse. Just clever.

The Color Case for the Samsung S III threw me for a loop because it never occurred to me anyone would want to spend time/money of producing a case for the “other” phone. Yes, I’m guilty of letting my own bias for the iPhone sometimes ignore all the peripherals created for Samsung smartphones. The Color Case is beautiful and as its name suggests – there are seven to choose from. Made of polycarbonate and treated with a scratch resistant finish, each case features an interesting set of alphanumerics inside which I’ve yet to decipher.

Both will be hitting retail soon and I have exciting news about that when they do launch. Keep your eyes peeled this October.
