Clamping The Wood For Furniture Posted: 29 Jun 2012 08:37 AM PDT It started off as a project exploring the possible ways of using clamps, and soon the Holdfast assignment stumbled into this eclectic range of exciting furniture. The idea was to employ clamps as tools as well as fasteners and are fashioned to reflect simplicity. They are based on the holdfast clamping system that holds materials to the surface of a workbench. Samuel explains, "The components are manufactured using a computer controlled wire bending device. The components are then inserted into a through hole and wedged under the material they are supporting, creating tension in the vertical leg and in turn creating a strong stiff supporting structure for shelves as well as side tables, stools and other occasional home furnishings." I find it a fascinating new way to create furniture, a wonderful blend of metal and wood. Designer: Samuel Weller - Related posts: |
Posted: 29 Jun 2012 07:57 AM PDT Lit is an eco-aware, unbreakable light bulb that revisits the old incandescent. Giving timeless design a new meaning, the bulb adapted to different types of lighting fixtures and is customizable because the sockets are modular. The designer claims it to be the world's first light bulb with a hybrid technology – LEDs and Optical fiber. Apparently the technology gives an incredible lifetime to the bulb, with an excellent dimmable light quality trough the time. Money savings and reduced enviornmetal impacts are assured! Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:01 AM PDT Gardening can be a rewarding and therapeutic activity- unfortunately, many urban dwellers will never get the chance to experience it! Using current hydroponics technology, the Auxano concept was designed to enable city dwellers to grow their own produce effectively and efficiently (and without mess!) within the space constraints of city living. Its innovative oxygenating pump system means no electricity is needed for the product to operate.
The root cradle slides out of the top making the harvesting of the vegetable or herb an easy process. The roots freely hang down from the cradle into the nutrient solution below. This bottom section unscrews revealing the nutrient reservoir. Feeding the plant from underneath the product makes the process more efficient and mess free. The nutrient solution needs to remain oxygenated to prevent it from stagnating. Auxano's innovative pump system sets this product out from any other hydroponic grower. The user simply pushes the underlying rubber pump a few times a day releasing bursts of oxygen into the nutrient tank above. The oxygen is pumped into the nutrient tank through a simple one way valve system. Operating the air flow manually enhances the user interaction with the product and also removes the need to introduce electricity to keep the nutrient solution aerated; in turn further enhancing the products eco-friendliness. The Lamp That Wants to Be a Flower Posted: 29 Jun 2012 12:01 AM PDT This clever design might seem a little obvious, but it’s actually quite thoughtful! The BLUM lamp’s floral inspiration is apparent in its form, but it also takes inspiration from living plant’s energy process. Set the plant by the window, and solar panels harvest the sun’s energy to power the bright LED lights. It’s the flower that gives back after the sun goes down!
